Micro.blog

I’m toying with the idea of moving this blog off WordPress. I get frustrated that I’d have to spend more money to do anything even quite basic with plugins for blogrolls etc. Any one reading this got experience with Micro.blog?

    1. I guess the ease of posting, supporting blogrolls, community, how much Manton Reese is a one man operation…

I get frustrated with WordPress insisting that I use Jetpack on my iOS devices and the fact that adding plugins needs a higher level of payment and I’m not sure what they are doing with AI.

I do have to think about the folks who follow my blog via email too and how willing they would be to migrate. My WordPress is paid up until September so at the moment I am just tinkering.

Thanks for getting back to me.

      1. It’s Manton, Jean, the community manager and Vincent, who does contract work. I think Manton uses other contractors occasionally. So, yes, small operation.

        • Blogroll support was just added, but not all themes support it yet.
        • Very easy to post. You can use the web, their apps, MarsEdit and other apps. Posts can be syndicated to Bluesky and Mastodon, and replies come back into your timeline.
        • The community is the strongest element – that’s one of the major reasons I use it.
        • I’d need to check, but I’m pretty sure you can export your mailing list from WordPress and import it into micro.blog.

  1. Yeah it’s frustrating. Expensive too. I was wondering the same thing as to how to transfer it entirely to somewhere else. It’s expensive to run. A couple of weeks ago, my hosting company also added (quite sneakily) an additional SEO function on my account which I never signed up for.

I use Jetpack but that’s because really, I don’t know anything else. I also use its security features as I get spammed a lot.

I can see a day that I’ll just archive the whole lot and be done with it. It’s getting way too expensive every year.

  2. If you want to have subscribers with Micro.blog you have to start at $10/month? That already bugs me.

  3. I use micro.blog in parallel to my WP blog. My posts end up on micro.blog via RSS, and any interaction I have there ends up in my blog. I also interact more directly on micro.blog itself in conversations as it’s a welcoming environment. A long time blogging buddy (frankmeeuwsen.com) recently moved entirely to micro.blog. I think Manton does a great job of providing a stable service, and is actively evolving / integrating it with things like ActivityPub so that seamless interaction with e.g. Mastodon is also available.

      1. And a plugin that I’d have to upgrade my WordPress to use! It’s funny how after all these years the conversational two and fro on blogs is still far from straightforward.

  4. As Ton already said, I moved from WordPress to Micro.blog since november 2023 and it feels great. It’s got its rough edges and I still need to figure out how to properly import blogposts from 2014 – 2023 into this new space, but who doesn’t like a challenge 🙂

My only gripe with Micro.blog is the connection between timeline and blog. Sometimes I just want to post something on a timeline regarding current events or whatever happens without directly turning it into a blogpost that also gets distributed via RSS. Reading through RSS gives it another context. I’m still on the fence for this and I feel it keeps me from “just posting”. Also because my current theme doesn’t give a good distinction between off-the-cuff notes and my more fleshed out blogposts.

Reading notes like that through RSS gives it another context in my opinion. I’m still on the fence for this and I feel it keeps me from “just posting”. 1. Thanks for this Frank, and sorry not to have responded sooner. Bloody WordPress is still randomly sending comments to spam. Nothing’s easy is it – thanks for the offer of help.
