Following your nose

I am visiting a lot of new cities here in Australia.  Understandably the locals want me to see the best of their home towns, and I am making an effort to visit the odd honeypot site. However I also like to “go off piste”. I like to wander, either on foot or by car, and just follow my nose.

It’s a bit like on the Internet, where I resist celebrity culture, or even the idea that there is one right answer that I will find if I try hard enough. The fear is that if you don’t see the special site, or read the right document, you have failed or somehow missed out.  But experience shows that by allowing for serendipity you often find a real sense of place, or the really valuable information. In both cases success is more down to your intent, and the way you go about searching, than it is about arriving.
